Making the best use of the MACS Listserv

The listserv is made up of various MACS member agencies who wish to be on the listserv.

You can use this tool in important ways.  If you would like feedback from others who may have already dealt with a particular issue, situation, or question, you can send your e-mail query to the listserv.  Your e-mail will be received by all more than 100 of your peers, and those who have helpful responses can respond to your e-mail.

Here is how to use the listserv:

1.  To send a message to the entire listserv ("posting" a message), simply address your message to the e-mail address provided by MACS:

Your message will be sent to all 100+ members of the listserv.

2.  If you wish to respond to an e-mail that was sent to you as a member of the listserv, you have two options:

    a.  If you wish your response to be seen by the ENTIRE listserv (all 100+ members), you can use the "Reply" function to send

your response.  Using "Reply" will send your response to the entire listserv.

   b.  If you wish your response to be more private, and to be sent only to a specific individual (typically, the person who sent the initial query) or individuals,

DO NOT use the "Reply" function.  Instead, use the "Forward" function and type in the specific e-mail address of the individual(s) you wish

        your response to go to.

Caveats:

1)  Do not use the listserv e-mail address for any e-mail that you wish to be private.  As described above, if you use the listserv e-mail address, your e-mail will be seen by more than 100+ other people.

2)  Be especially careful how you respond to e-mail you receive from the listserv.  As described above, using "Reply" will send your response to the entire listserv- this can be embarrassing or worse!    Using the "Forward" function requires you to type in a specific address (or addresses); this will assure that your response goes only to the person (or people) you wish it to go to.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Good luck using the listserv as a valuable resource.
